Irritable bowel Syndrome | IBS

Irritable bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a group of symptoms. IBS can occur for no specific cause. From studies by Digestive Disorders Foundation it is found that 1/3rd of the UK population suffers from Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Out of the 1/3rd population 1/10th of the population requires medical treatment for irritable bowel syndrome.

IBS can occur in any age, but normally it is observed between the age of 15 to 40. It is said that IBS is caused due to the nervous system disorder. The nervous system supplies the gut which helps the bowel contraction happens properly.

Symptoms of Irritable bowel Syndrome (IBS)

  • Fullness and bloating, tight and uncomfortable clothes which irritates the lower abdomen of the body. Because of it the person may suffer from flatulence and rumbling.
  • Changes in bowel habit
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Wind
  • Abdominal pain
  • Proctalgia fulax is what is found as one of the irritable bowel syndrome symptom. Pain in lower abdomen is called proctalgia fulax. This is not a very common symptom, people suffering from IBS comes across it quite often.

To avoid IBS follow some of the following practices:

  • Avoid food which triggers or worsens the IBS symptoms like tea, coffee, bread, spicy food etc.
  • Avoid foods which causes gas, to name a few avoid pulses, onions, cabbage, fuzzy drinks, dried fruits, sprouts.
  • Chew your food properly and eat slowly.
  • Eat food which contains lot of fiber in it.
  • Increase the number of meals per day, but reduce the diet, this will reduce the burden from the digestive system.
  • Drinking herbal tea is very good for digestive system.

Treatment for irritable bowel syndrome

There are many drugs and therapies available to cure irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). There are many medicines available for irritable bowel syndrome but it is advised to have it after proper diagnoses and prescribed by the doctor. These medicines are for different purposes like curing constipation problems or curing wind problems.

  • Acupuncture therapy is very ancient technique of treating irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Fennel is used for constipation, neroli is used for diarrhea and stomach cramps, peppermint for digestive problems this is the aromatherapy used for curing irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Homeopathy
  • Hypnotherapy
  • Evening primrose oil
  • Bach flower remedy
